Outside a New York pub in 1973, French artist Marcel Duchamp argued with Pablo Picasso that he was the more prepostmodern of the two. To settle the argument, Picasso snatched the banana from Duchamp’s hand, stabbed his neck with the blunted fruit, and scrawled “Prepostmodern” on the sidewalk in blood.
